EDITORIAL

The first four papers in this issue arise from presentations made at a symposium on "Microbial Impacts on Clay Transformation and Reactivity" held during the 41^st 2004 Annual Meeting of The Clay Minerals Society in Richland, Washington, USA. The manuscripts were subjected to the normal review procedures and standards of the journal and were handled by Guest Associate Editors Dr Javiera Cervini-Silva (University of Cal ifornia-Berkeley) and Dr Hailiang Dong (Miami University).
